If It Walks Like a Duck…

CRW_0003.CRWLeave the presence of a fool,  for there you do not meet words of knowledge. Proverbs 14:7 (English Standard Version)

Author’s disclaimer:  I have never seen the A&E reality TV series, Duck Dynasty so I cannot tell you about the program or its principals.

That being said, I’ve been reading about everyone’s boxers in a bunch over Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson calling homosexuality a “sin”.  Again, we have another celebrity who’s joined the ranks of the “Homo Haters” in our society.  I’ve also read where A&E suspended the show thanks to Phil.  Also was noted in the linked GQ article was that Phil had his own views of race as well, which is another story altogether and probably quite an earful as well.

Folks-homo and hetero-shouldn’t be surprised at ole Phil’s “revelation”.  From what I read, the man’s a pure fundagelical who lives in the Deep South-what do you expect?  We’re not talking about a cross-dressing Atheist in the West Village.  Duck Dynasty is Red-State conservatism in pure form sans suit and tie: guns, Jesus, and patriarchy rolled up together.  Plus the fact that Wal-Mart sells show-themed merchandise should drive this conservative point home further.

Plus, this is reality TV folks: TV that shows off, and  caters to, our baser levels.  From Parking Wars to Duck Dynasty and beyond, we see humans acting at their lower levels: be it cursing; fighting; racial/sexual epithets; you name it.  This is TV that sucks us in and gives us a chance to live vicariously through the cast of characters almost 24/7 thanks to digital channel availability. We’re not talking Cosmos or Face The Nation, we’re talking about foolishness-plain and simple.  The Scripture text at the beginning of the post warns us to get away from the presence of a fool-be it in person, or via the media; we’ll never find knowledge there.  And even though we think we’re just being “entertained and amused”, we’re actually becoming fools ourselves since we’re not gaining anything of value.  And in the end, we give value to the Phil Robertsons of our world by watching them.

God desires that we move higher in our thinking and living, not lower.  We have enough problems in our collective and individual lives trying to pull us down and suck us in already. Why should we drag ourselves lower by regarding such valueless and tasteless media?  We would do well to pay heed to the above text.

Even now, on Duck Dynasty’s related website, Duck Commander, the Robertson family prepared an “official” statement regarding Phil’s comments.  The statement attempts to paint Phil in a positive light, touting his faith, etc.  However, if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, and swims like a duck…it’s a duck.

No matter how Phil Robertson may cut (or shoot) it.  Peace!

About dangerouschristian

My name is Victor Reynolds. I'm a Christian who desires a more mystical approach to my spiritual life. I'm also a photographer as well who loves to create. I call myself "dangerous" because anyone-especially a Christian-who dares to be beyond the "norm" and allows to let the Christ live in them is dangerous.
