But truly I am full of power by the spirit of the Lord,
and of judgment, and of might,
to declare unto Jacob his transgression,
and to Israel his sin.
Hear this, I pray you, ye heads of the house of Jacob,
and princes of the house of Israel,
that abhor judgment, and pervert all equity.
They build up Zion with blood,
and Jerusalem with iniquity
Micah 3:8-10 (Authorized King James Version)
The news is in regarding the Trayvon Martin case. Martin’s killer, George Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder by a Florida jury. My prayers are with the Martin family during this dark time. As far as Zimmerman goes, God have mercy on his soul; he may be acquitted in the eyes of a Florida jury, but he’ll never be free.
Why am I not surprised? First we have Zimmerman’s shooting and killing Martin back on February 26, 2012. The 44 days it took for Sanford (Florida) Police to officially arrest Zimmerman. The trial, which has been a mockery of justice, and now this acquittal. In fact, I just read that Conservative blow-up doll, Ann Coulter said “hallelujah” to the Zimmerman acquittal (like any blow-up doll, Coulter’s head is full of hot air).
As an African-American man, and the father of a son, I am speechless. How do I explain to my son that this (supposedly) “Christian” nation can still find a young African-American male’s life expendable-either by the judicial system or the military? What do I tell my boy when he sees his contemporaries face injustice at a nation that supposedly follows Jesus? How can he feel free while racism can still threaten his freedom?
In the text above, God (through the prophet, Micah), exposed the sins of Israel, one of which is perversion of equity. One of the definitions of “equity” is “justice according to natural law or right; specifically : freedom from bias or favoritism*” (thanks to Merriam-Webster.com). God was pissed with Israel for twisting justice with favoritism and bias (a sin in God’s eyes).
Micah could be talking to Florida, and America at large. When you look at Florida, you still see the “Old South” with its racist history; and where many a guilty White person has literally gotten away with the murder of their Black victim. Plus, we see race as the one issue that still has yet to be resolved before we as a nation can move forward. However, with racism still tearing at our society, God is growing very impatient and angry. God has been years in giving this nation a chance for real dialogue and resolution so we could move forward. However, I see this nation dangerously close to a precipice it might fall into.
You see, for years racists have been using the Bible and spouting their “love for Jesus,” while treating people of other colors, religions, and now sexual preferences. God is weary of this and will soon bring His/Her Justice upon us. God will let this nation fall flat on its face; He/She will break Uncle Sam’s back and lay him out. Don’t believe me? Look at what’s happening now. Storms are kicking up a notch in Florida, threatening the very living of those therein. Florida has still to recover from the economic crisis of 2008. Beside those, Edward Snowden has (miraculously) stayed out of American Justice’s reach and has enough info to screw this country big time should he sing. We’re losing the war in Afghanistan and have extended our reach while bankrupting our nation. We’re slipping from a first-world to a third-world nation in less than 25 years. Look at the wildfires and droughts affecting the Southwest and Midwest.
God’s justice will come down on this nation. Its racism, sexism, homophobia, militarism, class-ism, and other sins will be America’s downfall. The Zimmerman’s of America, and their ilk will find God has turned His/Her back on this nation. They will face God and taste a justice never tasted before. God will let America fall into the hands of other nations and become their vassal (Uhh…remember non-White China?). This nation will become a has-been quick, fast and in a hurry.
It’s up to America, and her time’s running out. Either we learn from the Zimmerman case (and other miscarriages of race-based justice), and try not to repeat these injustices. Maybe we can still save this nation. Or, this nation will keep on its present course and wind up destroyed by God’s hand.
God knows what will happen in the days ahead.
Peace for us all.
