Somehow this madness must cease. We must stop now.
Martin Luther King, Jr, “Beyond Vietnam-A Time to Break Silence.
Oh, now be honest, Captain, warrior to warrior. You do prefer it this way, don’t you, as it was meant to be? No peace in our time. “Once more unto the breach, dear friends.” General Chang in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God. Matthew 5:9 (21st Century King James Version)
As I write this, Israel and the militant Islamic group, Hamas are currently fighting at Israel’s southern border. For the last four days, Israel’s been pounding Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip under the code-name, “Operation Pillar of Defense”. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have been waging war against Hamas rocket fire; and is considering a land invasion of Gaza to shut Hamas down.
This back-and-forth military action on both parties is the latest chapter in a long history of fighting in the region. Whether Israel vs. Hamas, Israel vs. Palestinians, Israel vs. Syria, or (if Netanayhu gets his way) Israel vs. Iran; everyone’s gunning for each other.
I know there are “Pro (fill in the blank) folks out there who will tell me that their pet group has a right to defend itself. That may sound good, however this has been going on for God knows how long (and I wouldn’t surprised if God forgot), and those arguments fall dead on my ears. And for these American “Christians United for Israel” fundageglicals who are united for Israel at the cost of everyone else based on myth, they’re just as bad as everyone in the region since they’ve spurned the way of peace taught by Jesus.
In my opinion, Israel, Hamas, and the rest of the cast don’t want peace; they’ll fight to the last person standing if they could based on some legend that gives them “rights” to the land. Or else they want “peace” based on their terms. It doesn’t matter how many innocents on whatever side die, it only matters that my particular religion-fueled ideology prevails. The “eye-for-an-eye” that prevails is going to eventually turn the region into one giant radioactive parking lot. What will make it worse is that other nations-including the US-will be drawn into the fray.
I’m with Dr. King above, this shit must stop. It’s high time that all parties are brought to the table for dialogue without their religious baggage. Innocent people are dying on all sides, and we’re watching Gaza being bombed into the Dark Ages. This is insanity that will drag all (even big bad Israel) down the road to a Perdition from which there’s no return.
And then, when Jerusalem’s a smoldering rubble; when Gaza’s a parking lot, when Jew and Arab wander about shell-shocked and homeless while their cities, towns and settlements are devastated, and the body count on all sides pile higher and higher, only then they will stop. I just hope and pray that it won’t get to that before they will stop.
Will they ever stop? It’s totally up to them. Let’s work and pray that they do while we have the time.
