Proclaim this among the nations:
“Prepare for war!
Wake up the mighty men,
Let all the men of war draw near,
Let them come up. Joel 3:9 (New King James Version)
Israel launches a first=strike attack on Iran to halt its nuclear weapons plan. US President Obama-not wanting to ruin a reelection-commits US forces in the region to assist. However, instead of a quick strike and victory, the attack draws Israel and the US into a dragged-out ground war as Iranian forces (and civilians) stand their ground. NATO and Japan provides some of their forces to help the US and Israel not to support Israel, but to have a share of the oil should Iran be defeated.
The war drags on. Unknown to Israel, al Qaeda “sleeper” operatives are activated in Israel and Africa-engaging in “blitzkrieg” like terrorist attacks in Israel’s major cities-killing scores. Also attacks on American, European and Japanese interests break out. Hamas forces in Lebanon also resume strikes to Israel’s northern borders. The Strait of Hormuz is also attacked and blocked up by pro-Iranian terrorists-causing a bottleneck in oil shipping to client states and driving up the price of oil; a problem as autumn in the Northern Hemisphere sets in.
Anti-war and anti-Israel sentiments foment in NATO member nations and in Japan as their people are killed in the battle. Pro-Israel lobbies in the US suddenly find financial support dropping; and are under the Federal microscope. US President Obama finds his administration in a quagmire and re-election hopes endangered. On the other hand, Republican Presidential candidate, Mitt Romney’s campaign uses this quagmire to quite possibly gain the White House. In the meantime, rumors are flying about the grooming of an “anti-Israel” candidate for the Presidency in 2016, regardless of who wins in 2012.
Even with an eventual Israeli victory, it’s a Pyrrhic one at best. Israel become a pariah state with UN condemnation; while its allies fare no better. Terrorist attacks on the attacking nations continue-at home and abroad. Eventually, a supposedly “defeated” Iran still develops an atomic device, which will eventually be “tested” on populated Israeli soil.
If this sounds like something out of a Tom Clancy novel, I wish I could say it was. However, this could be one future scenario I can think of based on an article in AlterNet I read warning of a “catastrophic” war between Israel and Iran; especially if Israel launches a first-strike prior to the American Presidential elections.
It’s no secret that Israel-fearing Iran’s development of nuclear weapons-is itching to blast Iran back into the Iron Age. It’s also no secret that Iran has the same sentiments towards Israel.
According to the AlterNet article, the Israelis are using the Presidential election timetable to force US President Obama’s hand to support them. It’s also no secret that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has this potential invasion as an ace up his sleeve with Obama’s attempts to secure a second term; a term that could allow Obama greater leverage in dealing with Israel should he win.
But it’s not just the elections that’s the problem, it’s the war itself. If such a war is fought, it could be at best a Pyrrhic victory for Israel-with or without US support. It wouldn’t be any better even if NATO lends a hand (to gain a share of Iranian crude). The above scenarios could still play out for all we know, creating a quagmire for all involved.
The current sanctions are the best option. Anything else, and the shit’s really gonna hit the fan-regardless who’s in the Oval Office. Plus, Israel needs to understand that it’s NOT invincible and may find itself being dragged down due to this attack. Plus, if the US commits its troops to an invasion of Iran, and the hostilities get protracted, US support for Israel might begin to wane as American boys and girls come home in flag-draped caskets.
An attack-no matter the justification-will in the end hurt all involved. As the Beatles sang, “give peace a chance”, or the shit will hit the fan and land on all of us.
