While You Were Doing Nothing…

When the watchman sees the enemy coming, he sounds the alarm to warn the people. Then if those who hear the alarm refuse to take action, it is their own fault if they die.
Ezekiel 33:3-4

When people are saying, “Everything is peaceful and secure,” then disaster will fall on them as suddenly as a pregnant woman’s labor pains begin. And there will be no escape.
1 Thessalonians 5:3
(Both scriptures New Living Translation)

These days, it appears that we’re living “comfortably numb” per Pink Floyd.  Fed a steady diet of nonsense while our world explodes and implodes with the crises of our day.  Economic instability, flash-points of conflicts in various spots on the globe, a runaway population growth, social and political turmoil, and an environmental time-bomb that’s soon to go off right in our faces confront us on a daily basis.  However, instead of collectively as a whole tackling these issues head-on, we ignore them.  Or even worse, we ridicule the few who do confront these issues through the corporate media.

However, do you notice it’s the same above media that feeds us a lot of nonsense on an hourly basis?  Reality TV, “cop and robber” programs, prime-time juvenile humor that even  my four-year-old son would find stupid, overpriced commercials seducing us to buy more than what we can afford, characters designed for us to live vicariously through, multi-million dollar sports venues…you name it.

Even the Internet’s not safe as said media tries to gobble up online control.  Insipid YouTube videos, idiotic websites designed to entertain, online porn, and other “wonders”  to keep us glued to our monitors.

We’re so “doing nothing” because we don’t want to face our collective problems.  We ignore these problems in hopes they’ll go away on their own.  But like cancer that can metastasize unless treated, these problems will still grow unless confronted-they won’t just simply “go away”.  However we sit and do nothing, being lied lulled into thinking that all’s well with our world.  We can still amuse ourselves and need not worry…

This ignorance will ultimately be our downfall if we don’t act.  If we don’t change our attitudes towards the environment and act as the stewards God called us to be, if we don’t push for peace in our world, if we don’t promote family planning and wise use of our resources, and if we don’t reign in an out of control economy we’ll find ourselves in deep shit. We’ll be those unfortunate souls noted in the above Scriptures-those who refuse to take action only to have destruction fall upon them.  Or, we’ll be like the Parisians in the photo used for this post when they realized that the Nazis were taking over their town.

And on that day, we’ll realize (albeit too late) that we’ll no loner be able to sit and do nothing.  For we might just become nothing-no more.

Peace!

About dangerouschristian

My name is Victor Reynolds. I'm a Christian who desires a more mystical approach to my spiritual life. I'm also a photographer as well who loves to create. I call myself "dangerous" because anyone-especially a Christian-who dares to be beyond the "norm" and allows to let the Christ live in them is dangerous.

While I can sympathize with your jaded outlook, I think it is too cynical. You list many problems that people are actively and collectively trying to tackle, such as the European Union working on its economic instability. If you were to look into all these issues, you would find people passionately dedicating their lives to these problems or at least taking steps to address them. Your broad condemnation of so many calls to mind the term “sheeple” with its note of condescension and arrogance. I’d ask that you rethink such a sweeping generalization of humanity.

    • Thank you for your comment. I’m not at all cynical about what’s happening, or ignoring the good that’s being done. If that were the case, I would have titled the post,”Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off” and would have had a picture of a mushroom cloud.

I’m not being condescending at all, I’m going by what I see. And after being in this reality for just about 50 years, I’m entitled to my opinion. If you’re read other posts I’ve wrote, you would have seen my hopes for us as a species. Yet, please understand that I’m not a Pollyanna. And I’ve read plenty of blogs on this topic that make me look like sunshine and lollipops.

Again, thank you for your comment. Peace.
